Week 2

A. Read Graphic Design the new Basics: pages 33-47 

What are the fundamental design elements and principles of visual organization, hierarchy and aesthetics.

PROJECT: Visual Principles POINT LINE PLANE
1. Class will be divided into groups: point, line, and plane. As homework, each group will explore the environment with a digital camera or phone, looking for surprising and intriguing visual examples. To see what we are looking for view the attachment: Examples of point, line, plane observation.

2. Choose your group’s 10 best examples, and crop them to a 6 x 6 square. Post your own digital square images in your blog as well as the top 10 from your group.

3. In class using the blog each group will present their top 10 to the class and discuss what they see. Points and lines can be positive or negative, large or small, active or static, single or in groups. This project is worth 5 points.

Week 1 |  January 26-28 Formstorming

What is graphic design and who are the key players? What about the design community in San Diego and what is AIGA? What is the process of design? In class demonstration on how to create a blog where you will upload your exercises.

PROJECT: 100 ITERATIONS
1. Choose subject (egg, A, cup, head, ?, owl...etc)
2. Create a  poster including 100 images (either original or found)

Introduction of Research Project Design Project A - two parts

PROJECT A: “A Great Mind in Design” Research Assignment
You will choose a great mind in design from a class list to complete a research project due June 10th at the end of the semester.

These creative individuals represent the fields of advertising, book, corporate, cross-discipline, environmental design, film and video, illustration, Internet, new media, print, and type design. This diverse field showcases both young designers and experienced professionals.

Create a digital presentation for your peers [InDesign to .pdf] that will be posted in your blog. It must include: name, biography, personal perspective on design, samples of their work and your assessment of this mind in design. You need to create a bibliography of all your sources used at the end.





Setting Up Your Course Blog

1. Go to: www.blogger.com
2. Create a new Google Account if you do not already have one.
3. Follow thru to: CREATE A NEW BLOG
4. Name your blog: "BasicGDS16LastFirst"
5. For this class we area going to limit the layout to "Simple" pick a basic color scheme, no widgets, but it will need the ability for comments to be added per post.

Log in instructions for our web enhanced course, on the first day of class, go to: https://sdccd.blackboard.com 
Type your Username : 7-digit College Student ID (CSID) number. 
Type your Password: mmddyyyy (birthdate with no hyphens, slashes, or spaces) or use your current password if you are a returning Blackboard Learn 9.1 user. 
After logging in, you will see your My SDCCD portal page. 
Look on your My Courses list and click on the name of the course.
